Speaking with One Voice

The Northeast Pool & Spa Association is your voice on legislation and regulations impacting our industry. NESPA GRAC monitors legislative action across the region and represents the pool and spa industry when these important actions are being debated.

NESPA's Government Relations Action Committee (GRAC) brings together dedicated member volunteers and lobbyists on behalf of our members to oppose onerous over-regulation and advocate for our industry. We have important relationships with Federal, State and local officials and are in regular contact to share our industry’s perspective on legislation.

The Government Relations Action Committee consists of representatives from each of our four chapters.  If you have questions about legislation and government regulations contact NESPA at 609-689-9111.

COVID-19 and Swimming Pools & Hot Tubs

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) continues to report that there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans using pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19. CDC Guidelines on Closing Commercial Hot Tubs/Spas

On March 24, Center for Disease Control (CDC) provided the following guidance on how to properly shut down hot tubs/spas as part of aquatic facility closures.  The improper closure of hot tubs/spas could create conditions favorable to Legionella and other bacterial growth in these water systems. The recommendations below from the CDC were adapted from the Model Aquatic Health Code.

Closing Hot Tubs/Spas

  1. Clean accessible surfaces, scrubbing away slime and biofilm
  2. Apply a biocidal shock treatment
  3. Drain and remove as much water from the system as possible
  4. Remove filters
  5. Leave filters to dry*
  6. Keep the hot tub/spa as dry as possible, protecting it from external water sources (for example, hoses)

*Clean filters before reuse and replace filters or replace filter media as recommended by the manufacturer.
